Dublin Night Life

Local Bars, Thumbs UP from Staff:

Sarah recommends:

PUBS:

MA REILLY’S.  Upper Rathmines Road.

It’s a bit out of the city centre, but for a traveller wanting to experience a real Irish pub without the tourists, this is a great place.  The staff is friendly, the guinness is good and the atmosphere is relaxing, what more could you want?
The interior is dark and cosy, with flagstone floors, oak beams and worn old wooden furniture. The lighting is low and atmospheric, with candles shoved into old wine bottles dripping with layers of old wax on every table.
The clientele are a mixed bunch, from the solitary bearded man perched at the bar nursing a pint of the black stuff over the Irish Times crossword, to the group of rowdy students availing of the excellent value ‘Student Pints’ for just €3.50, every night of the week.
There’s live music organised every Friday night in the bar, which is free, and as the pub is the local watering hole for many of the area’s musicians, impromptu jam sessions are struck up regularly in the heated beer garden out the back.

HAIRY LEMON. Stephen Street Lower.

This pub shows all rugby and football matches and when there’s a big game, the place is jam-packed.  The food is delicious and very reasonably priced and the guinness is also delicious and less expensive than in Temple Bar. They don’t generally have live music, but it’s a great cozy place for a relaxing pint.

FARRINGTON’S. Temple Bar.

Live music. Great staff.  Good Guinness. Out of the pubs in Temple bar, this one is where you’d find the most locals.  Great musicians who often hang around for a few pints after their gigs. Friendly staff make sure that you enjoy yourselves and never have an empty glass!

Matias recommends:

O Donoghue’s, 15 Merrion Row

They have the best Guinness I’ve tried so far (4.80e a pint). Really central location and close to the Hostel.

Not a tourist pub, people you’ll find there are mostly Irish.

Wheelan’s, 25 Wexford St

Right around the corner form the hostel, there’s Wheelan’s. Always great live music. Even if there’s no people in the streets or other pubs, you’ll find people there. Lots of fun.

Arlington Hotel, Lower Ormond Quay

They have a daily Irish dance show which is worth seeing. I’d recommend this one for guests who would like to see Irish dancing.

The Bar with No Name

3 Fade St, D2

What is it about this bar that has no name? Tucked away in a small street, it resembles an apartment with the laidback environment of a party at your friends flat. Cool outdoor smoking area with benches and pillows.

Bernard Shaw. Graffitied walls, laidback crowd, pooltable, DJ’s spinning 6 nights a week. Pizza bus in the back for those munchies.

Anseo: cosy alternative bar right around the corner, anseo, the Irish word for ‘here’ hosts cool deejays and comedy nights.

Felix & Cristhian recommend:

The Mezz

In Temple Bar, very different, the prices are pretty normal, more classic rock than in others pubs, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Doors, and reggae, funk, ska, etc. Almost every day you can find some band playing there. On Wednesday’s they do a “Reggae Night” (is the only place in Temple Bar which is really busy on Wednesday’s!!!!)

Shebeen Chic

On George St. It’s a restaurant and a bar, very good music, a very artistic environment – a cool spot with chandeliers, painting hanging on the ceiling, bands playing on two separate stages, chaiselongs for lounging in… Sometimes there are some bands playing Irish jazz or blues, and also, downstairs, they have stand-up shows two times per week.

RIRA, an excellent night club, is near to Shebeen Chic, and the admission there is free!!!

Czech Inn

On Excess St. (Temple Bar), what can I say??? THE CHEAPEST BEER IN DUBLIN!!! (10 Euros x 3 pints!!!)

CLUBS

Sarah recommends:

RI RA. Dame court, off S. Great Georges Street.

Cheap drinks, small dance floor, great tunes!  A good place to go with friends for a bit of dancing and a lot of drinking.  Open nightly (except Sundays) until 2:30 am, free entry before midnight and sometimes after.  They have different themed nights including 80’s night, blues, and nights with guest djs. Good craic with friends.

TWISTED PEPPER. Middle Abbey Street.

Good 3-level dance club.  Often have brilliant DJs playing, drinks are reasonably priced and is just good fun.  They sometimes play big-name

gigs and so tickets are needed, but of a regular night there are no tickets, just good fun.
